Brainstorms
|
These are my brainstorms which relate to my theme in such ways. The idea I am going to carry out is showing a comparison of how relationships are. For example, what what everyone would see a relationship as, which is happy and what people don't see, which can be a different emotion such as angry. But more ideas built around that such as how I'm going to get my model to express themselves. I am going to lay out the pictures side by side so you can tell that there is a comparison between each photograph.. I will show comparison to what people expect a relationship to be like and the not so good side of a relationship. This will include for me to direct my models to do the correct facial expressions and poses. |
Drafts
|
Draft 1
My first idea is to show a couple's back towards each other to show they are angry with each other, and you're able to show this through facial expressions, this is what people wont see, which can be known as 'behind the scenes' of a relationship. This is an important part because I have to show that the there is a blatant comparison between this photograph and my others. Draft 2 This idea shows how someone meets another person, and how their relationship develops over time and what they can become after having a great friendship. I didn't end up using this draft as an idea because this process would start way from the beginning when I want to show how a relationship would be during the relationship. Draft 3 This draft shows a couple with no problems whatsoever, but someone gets introduced to someone new who's they get along with better and eventually leaves that person for the new person. I used part of this draft as I wanted to show a happy couple, which people are more likely to see when a couple is around other people. |

Demi Cambridge's Photography
|
Demi Cambridge's photography summaries a comparison of what a person is doing in the location. The feature which I noticed first was the split between the two photographs to show that comparison. This is effective to me because I want to show a similar layout in my final pieces, I also like her work because it shows two different interpretations within one photograph. Demi Cambridge is trying to imply that there can be two stories to one situation, as in this photograph, two stories within one photograph. She could influence my work by the way she has laid out her work. Demi Cambridge is similar to the other photographers because they all composition in their photographs but this photographer is different because of the way she presents her photographs. In my final piece I am most likely to use the layout of these photographs the most as I can show a comparison in one photograph, to the other. |
'PieOver' Photography |
This photograph is trying to summarize that every couple can be different. For example in this photograph, it shows two people well dressed and they fit in their location. The feature that appealed to me the most was the composition because the photographer needed to stand in a the correct position to capture their full body. I like this photographers work because it shows something which you'd expect. This can influence my work because composition is a key factor I have to use in my photographs. This photographer is similar and different to Demi Cambridge. It is similar because they are both comparing something. For example, in Demi Cambridge's photography, she is comparing one sight with another, and in 'PieOver' they compare this type of relationships to what they can be. The photography is also different because of how many models are used in one photograph and how its presented. This type of composition is going to be used in my final piece as I want at least one or two photographs that show the full body of my models. |
Lindsay Skeans
|
Lindsay Skeans photography is very composition based because of the way she included every object intended. The features that appeal to me is the couple theme and how the location has been thought through. I like this photograph because it is able to show everything that is intended. This can influence my work because composition is a great deal for my final piece. Lindsay Skeans is also very similar to other photographers in some ways but different as well. She is different because of what she focuses on, which is composition and what she captures in her photographs. But this is a similar factor because all the photographs and my other two photographers have used composition in their photographs. This is similar because my other two photographers are also focusing on a particular story in a photograph that they want us to notice. |

Lighting
|
In this experiment I am going to focus on a particular background that a couple can stand behind and show how they feel with each other through facial expressions and the way I tell them to react with each other. The way I can do this is by using lighting. My idea is very lighting based because with lighting I'm able to show more in the photographs. The lighting I used in this photo-shoot was Rembrandt lighting and also in this photo-shoot I focused on facial expressions as well as lighting and in Photoshop I contrasted the photographs to give them more of a glamours look. In this photo shoot I kept the contrast and the brightness the same throughout so all the photographs look similar and I've shown the step by step process of that after every photograph. I also used the airbrushing tool to get rid of any blemishes or spots on my model. |
Composition: Rule of Thirds
|
This photo-shoot shows a composition method which is rule of thirds. This will help me in my final piece because I am going to position my models in certain positions which can show different purposes within the photographs, such as emotions between two people in a relationship. I used split lighting which shows more of an emphasis on rule of thirds. I can use this composition technique in my final piece when I show the different facial expressions that both of models will have set to their role. In this photo shoot I kept the contrast and the brightness the same throughout so all the photographs look similar and I've shown the step by step process of that after every photograph and I wanted this photo shoot and the photo shoot above to look similar in the brightness and contrast area. I also used the airbrushing tool to get rid of any blemishes or spots on my model which I also done on the photo shoot above. |
Composition: Filling The Frame
|
My interpretation for this photo shoot was to focus on filling the frame. I am going to use this composition technique in my final piece but with people as I am going to focus up close to my models with the background and some foreground in the photographs. This helps me in my final piece because I am showing some sort of aspect of the interpretation of what my final piece can be like. By using 'filling the frame' I am also able to show off how the two people in a relationship feel towards each other by their facial expressions, how they react with each other etc. |

Out of these photographs, I had chosen three of the best photographs out of each group which was a happy side to a relationship and a angry side to a relationship. The reason why I picked this bunch of photographs that could or have been used in my final piece because the composition was to how I expected it to be and I knew I can work with each photograph in Photoshop to get it to my expectations. For example, I know the lighting was poor in a few of these photographs but I knew I could enhance the lighting or brightness in Photoshop. Another reason why I chose these photographs to be one of my final pieces because I knew that I was able to work with them so I could adjust the contrast, brightness, cropping and other effects.

Relationships: Happy Side with Photoshop techniques
|
The purpose of this photograph was to show how together the couple are and show love and affection for each other by how the male is looking at his partner and my female model looking in a distance to try get the males attention.
The purpose of this photograph was to show how happy the couple are by getting both models to show happy facial expressions to each other. This is important because without these expressions I'm unable to show a comparison.
The purpose of this photograph is to show how together the couple are and how natural and laid back they are with each other which also shows how comfortable they are with each other.

Key Image (Idea): The key idea of this photo shoot was to find two models, one male and one female and make them act like a happy couple. Later on in AO3 I will do a comparison on what a happy couple is like and what people don't see within the couple. For example, showing their anger towards each other.
Setting/Location: All of these photographs had been taken in Osterly Park.
Props: There were no props used in this photo shoot.
Make-up/Costume: The make-up and costume in this photo shoot was vital. This is because I wanted to show off a casual side to a couple so they both seem relaxed in their environment. My female model wore make-up to show that she had a glamours but casual side to her and my male model never wore any make up. This is because males are more likely not to wear make-up if they're wanting to look casual. My male and females costume were very similar as I wanted them both to show off a casual and very laid back look.
Lighting: The lighting used in this photo shoot is natural light. I used natural light to contrast with my models as they look natural and casual which was my main aim.
Editing: In these photographs I adjusted the brightness, contrast, the crop tool, spot healing tool and the surface blur tool. The surface blur tool is another technique that I was able to teach myself as I was in the process of getting the final outcome.

Relationships: Angry Side with Photoshop techniques
|
The purpose of this photograph is to show how apart the couple are which can show they have had an argument or they aren't getting along in that moment of time. This photograph came out successful because without these expressions I am unable to show a comparison between a happy couple and a angry couple.
The purpose of this photograph is to show how angry the couple are at each other. I have done this by making both model's backs face each other to show they're not getting along and used facial expressions to show the anger in their faces.
The purpose of this photograph is to show how separate both models are from each other to show how apart the two models are from each other. This was successful because I was able to get the right composition technique and adjust the photograph to its correct potential using Photoshop.

This photo shoot was very similar to the photo shoot above, but this photo shoot had a different concept to it.
Key Image (Idea): The key idea for this photo shoot was to have the same two models but for them to show that they're angry at each other through facial expressions and body language towards each other.
Setting/Location: Osterly Park
Props: There were no props used in this photo shoot.
Make-up/Costume: The make up and costume was kept the same in this photo shoot because I still wanted to show that natural look within the couple.
Lighting: The lighting used in this photo shoot was natural light as I still wanted the same natural and casual effect.
Editing: As I was editing these pictures I used a new technique I had taught myself which was called 'Surface Blur'. To activate this effect you had to press CTRL + J (on a PC) CMD + J (on a MAC). After this I had to activate the 'Convert to Smart Filters' and select surface blur and get the blur to how you want it. This technique also works as a type of airbrush tool. (This editing technique was used in my first photo shoot as well so nothing look too different from each other).

Merging the Final Pieces together
In Photoshop my aim was to put two pictures together to show the comparison. I put together one photograph from the happy side of a relationship and one angry side of a relationship to show the comparison between them. The process to do this was to open both photographs and drag one photograph into the other and place the photograph where I wanted the photograph to be. The next step was to reveal all the photographs so I would know where to place it. After this had been done I had to scale one photograph so the side would match with the other but I still had to make sure the photograph didn't look to stretched or too wide. Then I'd have to save the two photographs so the picture is just one when it has been opened. This process applied to all the screen shots on the left. |
Overall Evaluation
In this unit I planned everything on time. For example, doing all my photo shoots, editing and even re-doing any photo shoots which didn't meet my expectations. This was an advantage for me because I was able to get my AO1 and AO2 completed before the exam which just left me with the other two assessment objectives so I know I was able to complete my AO3 photo shoots and editing and being able to put together my final piece in the time given. What I could have done better in this unit was maybe doing more photo shoots so I had more photographs to chose from and work with, with different models and different locations.

These photographs below are my final pieces which show the same couple but a comparison to what people see them as, which is the couple being happy towards each other with these photographs on the left hand side. And what they could be like behind the scenes, which is angry towards each other with these photographs on the right hand side.
